Un nome che non è sicuramente uno sconosciuto per l'Italia: nel 2000, nell'anno del Giubileo, proprio monsignor Wiliam Joseph Levada invitò l'Italia, e in particolare il governo, a "fermarsi sull'orlo del burrone". Il riferimento era al Gay Pride che le autorità italiane avevano autorizzato quell'estate a Roma. Levada mise in guardia dalla manifestazione e suggerì al Segretario di Stato vaticano, cardinale Angelo Sodano, di esercitare ua sorta di 'moral suasion' su Palazzo Chigi perchè non desse l'ok alla manifestazione. Levada inviò in Vaticano anche un video con le immagini dei cortei e delle sfilate gay di San Francisco, sede due anni prima del precedente raduno mondiale dei gay. E nel video c'erano immagini fortemente provocatorie riprese in quell'occasione davanti alla Cattedrale.

"Non sapete cosa vi aspetta", disse ai giornalisti italiani. "Non ci posso credere che questo avvenga a Roma durante il Giubileo. Evidentemente non ci si rende conto di quello che è". L'arcivescovo di San Francisco sottolineò che di solito i costumi e le maschere utilizzate nei cortei gay nella metropoli americana avevano per oggetto anche caricature del Papa e delle suore, accompagnati da gesti osceni e spogliarelli. E per questo lanciò l'appello a "fermarsi sull'orlo del burrone".
